EXPECTATIONS
With Karthik Calling Karthik, the team of Rock
On and Luck By Chance comes together once
again with Farhan Akhtar in the lead, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
as the composer trio and Javed Akhtar as the lyricist.
However, it is surprising that there is not much clarity
around what to expect from the music. Perhaps this has
something to do with the title of the film and also the
fact that Karthik Calling Karthik is hardly being
sold as a musical. Prepared to listen to the album with
an open mind and be ready to be surprised, one plays on
Karthik Calling Karthik.
MUSIC
It's the sound of 'Hey Ya' that sticks on to
you in the very first couple of minutes of the namesake
song's play. It's an English beginning for 'Hey Ya!'
which is sung primarily by Clinton Cerejo who is supported
by Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa behind the mike. Soon
the song takes a Hinglish turn with both the languages heard
alternatively, hence resulting in an interesting outing. Set
as a soft Western track with a beautiful melody to it, 'Hey
Ya!' has a Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy stamp to it and turns out
to be a catchy tune which brings on a smile by default. An
urban track which also appears in a rather well done 'remix
version', this one gives a good start to the album and is a
winner.It takes time for a
listener to warm up to 'Uff Teri Adaa' as it
appears to be a typical club number that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
have been making for years now. However, after a couple of
hearing one can catch nuances in this rather engaging track
that turns out to be far more entertaining than it appeared
in it's first listening. While Shankar Mahadevan leads the
show and in the process bringing in an Indian touch to the
proceedings, it is the sonic effect in Alyssa Mendonsa's
voice that gives 'Uff Teri Adaa' an added touch. A
good track that deservingly finds a 'remix version' for it
as well, 'Uff Teri Adaa' deserves to be choreographed
well and presented to the audiences.
'Jaane Ye Kya Hua' has a soft beginning to it
and the moment you hear the voice of the male singer, you
know there and then that why is KK so special to the Hindi
music industry when it comes to a soulful quality outing.
This love song is the kind of stuff that music of Wake Up
Sid and Luck By Chance was made of. For those who
don't quite hunt for a routine hero-heroine pyaar-mohabbat
naachgaana and instead strive for a certain quality outing,
'Jaane Ye Kya Hua' is the one to vouch for. Just the
right kind of number that lifts a scene as a part of the
background score, 'Jaane Ye...' turns out to be
another good call for Karthik Calling Karthik.
It's a pensive beginning for 'Kaisi Hai Ye Udaasi'
(as the title suggests) and one is instantly reminded of
R.D. Burman, courtesy the faint sound of flute which is
heard from a distance. Kailash Kher sings at a low pitch
while being in total control of affairs and it is nice to
hear him in such mode. The song stays on to be sad with an
indication of depressing times faced by the protagonist,
hence staying to be truly situational. Sukanya Purkayastha
joins him mid-way and together they do well to be in perfect
harmony while maintaining the overall mood of the song.
Suraj Jaggan, Shankar Mahadevan, Caralisa, Monteiro and
Malika Singh come together to create 'Karthik Calling
Karthik' which makes one remember the kind of
soundtrack that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy had created for Johnny
Gaddaar a few years back. The similarity lies in the
dark mood of the film which promises enough chilling,
thrilling and dramatic moments. Yet another Hinglish number
which has an interesting flow, courtesy an array of singers
coming together alternatively, 'Karthik Calling Karthik'
(which later appears in a 'remix version') may perhaps be
the one for the quintessential music video.
Finally comes the theme track 'Karthik 2.0'
which is basically sans any lyrics and is primarily an out
and out musical outing. It's the rock feel created by this
four minutes piece which pretty much makes the listener
aware about the theme and genre of the film and expect an
out and out thriller outing.
OVERALL
There is no denying the fact that Karthik Calling Karthik
doesn't compromise on the quality aspect. In the process of
doing so, it stays true to the subject, due to which the
musical team of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Javed Akhtar make the
kind of songs that go well with the film. There may not be
instant attention grabbing chartbuster songs in the album
but still, on repeat listening they manage to do well. Since
the film doesn't have music as it's selling point and hence
the most integral part of the narrative, awareness amongst
audiences about the songs would take it's time. However,
once the film releases (and in case turns out to be
successful), an added run of the album on the music stands
can be expected.
